What: A satirical farce about vampires, werewolves and melodrama. Now more about the season's final play. The Ensemble Theatre has been putting out a number of good plays this year, and the final one for 2010 is the most entertaining of the lot, imho. If you've ever seen and enjoyed a Hammer Horror or the Carry On team's take on them, the very (very) funny Carry On Screaming, then the chances are high that The Mystery of Irma Vep, now on at Edinburgh's Lyceum until 14 March, is for you. The Mystery of Irma Vep is a 1984-written play by American playwright Charles Ludlam. The play has hints of such productions as “The Mystery of Irma Vep” by Charles Ludlam, a play in three acts using two actors; or “Noises Off” which shows the “other show” backstage during a British play called Nothing On. Audiences step into the Victorian home of Lord Edgar Hillcrest and Lady Enid Hillcrest to solve “The Mystery of Irma Vep” in the Kitchen Theatre's latest production. The Mystery of Irma Vep, which debuted in 1984, is perhaps the archetypal camp play. When: Fridays As each performer plays the diva, the actors literally push each other out of the spotlight, becoming frustrated with the other's longer, dramatic moments, and impatiently vamping until the other changes costumes. Ricky Graham and Varla Jean Merman play all of the roles, incorporating break-neck costume changes and playing with theatrical conventions. With the allure of romanticized vampirism clearly on the rise, as demonstrated by innocents like me knowing the “Twilight: New Moon” plot and release date, Charles Ludlam's classically irreverent “The Mystery of Irma Vep,” directed by Sean Graney, graced the stage of It would be criminal to neglect the brilliant gender commentary of the two-actor play, in which numerous characters, men and women alike, glide in and out of the parlor with swiftness and confidence. Playing every character in the production, McNicoll and Gray are on top form, bouncing off each other (and around the stage) like two schoolboys at their Christmas play. This is Charles Ludlam land -- specifically The Mystery of Irma Vep, the first play of Open Stage Theatre's new season.
